In Venus and Serena, the new documentary that hit select theaters recently, director and producer Michelle Major and her team dug into the lives of the Williams sisters during 2011. With unfettered access, the cameras caught the pair practicing with their parents, recovering from injuries with blood-filled IV bags and learning from John McEnroe when to curse out referees -- and Serena smooching with then-boyfriend Common.
(The Root) -- In The Root's first-ever Reddit Ask Me Anything, our Race Manners columnist Jenée Desmond-Harris took all of your burning questions about race etiquette. Need to know how to talk about race with the children in your life? Want to know why it might not just be a preference if someone says, "I'm not attracted to black people"? Check out the transcript below.
(The Root) -- Ethel and Eugene Arms have three children, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Now, after 49 years of marriage, the Birmingham, Ala., couple have something they've waited on for 50 years -- prom memories.
The high school sweethearts didn't go to the prom in 1963, because for students who attended black high schools in Birmingham, there wasn't one. In May 1963, hundreds of these students had protested for civil rights as part of the Children's March -- facing fire hoses, dogs and police with clubs. Many went to jail, and several were kicked out of school.
Officials at the time canceled senior proms and several other school activities, for safety reasons, they said. Students said the cancellations were punishment aimed at those who dared to stand up to protest segregation laws.
Colorlines' Imara Jones hopes that someone is paying attention to a recent report on how to fix the policy mess's impact on communities of color.
Despite recent headlines trumpeting a return of America's real estate market to its boom-time highs, a report released today by the Alliance for a Just Society shows how little of that has trickled into communities of color. The document, entitled "Wasted Wealth," is a sobering reminder of the gap between top-line economic cheerleading and the reality of what's happening on the ground.
As "Wasted Wealth" lays out, close to 2.5 million families lost homes in just three years. Communities that were majority people of color saw foreclosures take place at almost twice the rate as white communities, with an average loss of wealth 30 percent higher per household.
More than 3,000 job seekers overwhelmed the Municipal Services Building in Center City in Philadelphia for a job fair Friday morning intended for ex-offenders, forcing officials to shut it down with a promise to reschedule, ABC News reports.
The 3rd Annual Ex-Offenders Job Fair, sponsored by the City of Philadelphia, was set for today between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on the 16th floor of the Municipal Services Building, located across from City Hall.
The first fair drew 1,000 applicants, and last year only 100 people showed up.
Word of today's job fair, however, spread through social media, drawing more than 3,700 job hopefuls to the Municipal Services Building.
